Biography

David Huang, MD, PhD is the Director of the Doheny Laser Vision Center, Charles C. Manger III, MD Chair of Corneal Laser Surgery, and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology & Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California.    He performs LASIK and PRK with the CustomVue technology for the correction of nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia.  For patients who cannot have laser vision correction, he also performs Intacs intracorneal implants, Verisyse phakic intraocular lens implants, astigmatic keratotomy (AK), and natural lens replacement procedures.  He is also widely consulted for complications of LASIK, corneal transplantation and other corneal surgeries.

Dr. Huang earned his MD degree from Harvard Medical School.  He completed ophthalmology residency training at the Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California, and fellowship training in Corneal Diseases and Refractive Surgery at Emory University.  He also earned a PhD degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the field of Medical Engineering and Medical Physics.  As part of the PhD research, Dr. Huang co-invented optical coherence tomography (OCT), a high-resolution cross-sectional imaging technology that is now indispensable in the diagnosis of eye diseases.  His PhD research also included development of femtosecond lasers, which are now widely used in corneal and refractive surgery.  He is one of a very few doctors with deep understanding of laser surgery from both a clinical and engineering perspective.

Dr. Huang is well known for his research and teaching in refractive surgery, laser and imaging technologies.  Dr. Huang leads the Center for Ophthalmic Optics and Lasers (www.COOLLab.net). The National Institute of Health (NIH) has awarded him 4 research grants totaling over 8 million dollars.  He has produced over 70 scientific articles and book chapters, 8 patented inventions and 2 books.  He has taught 19 instruction courses at the American Academy of Ophthalmology and delivered 99 conference presentations and 44 invited lectures.

For his contributions to ophthalmology, Dr. Huang has been recognized with the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.   For his excellence in clinical care, Dr. Huang has been voted by his peers as one of the Top Doctors in America.    Most recently, he received an endowed chair at the University of Southern California.  Dr. Charles C. Manger III, MD, a pioneer in refractive surgery himself, endowed the Chair in Corneal Laser Surgery to support Dr. Huang’s continuing research in improving the safety of corneal laser surgery and developing new laser surgery options for patients with corneal diseases.
