Experience

Dr. Samuel Yiu received a B.A. in Chemistry, a M.S. in Applied Biometry, and the Ph.D. in Physiology & Biophysics from the University of Southern California. His M.D. degree was received from the University of Alberta, Canada. Dr. Yiu completed a residency in ophthalmology at Dalhousie University, Canada and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at the Doheny Eye Institute. He is currently an Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology, and Physiology and Biophysics at Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. He is also the Director of the newly established Ocular Surface Center. In addition, he is the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Ophthalmology at USC Keck School of Medicine.

 

Dr. Yiu is a member of the American academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Tears film and Ocular Surface Study Group, International Ocular Surface Society, International Society for Stem Cell, Tissue Engineering International Society, the Los Angeles Society of Ophthalmology, and the Max Fine Eye Society. He also serves as a reviewer for the prestigious American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Journal, “Ophthalmology”, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and the Journal “Cornea”. He is the recipient of numerous research awards and is the author of many published reports, reviews, and abstracts.

 

A cornea and refractive surgery specialist, Dr. Yiu’s major research interests include the mechanism and cellular control of lacrimal gland fluid and protein secretion; regulation of tear formation and its relation to dry eye, in particularly after refractive surgery, corneal limbal stem cells and its role in ocular surface diseases and tissue engineering. He is well experienced in the treatment of all aspects of refractive surgery including nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. He also performs corneal transplantation, corneal limbal stem cells transplantation, and cataract surgery.
