American Academy of Ophthalmology Publishes Report on Hyperopic LASIK

LASIK for farsightedness found to be safe, predictable and effective when performed within accepted limits

August 2004

The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Ophthalmic Technology Assessment Committee published a report LASIK for hyperopia (farsightedness), hyperopic astigmatism, and mixed astigmatism in the prestigious journal Ophthalmology. The committee reviewed results from FDA clinical trials and 120 published articles. Based on the available data, the report found that LASIK procedures for the treatment of low (<3 diopters) to moderate (3-5 diopters) amount of hyperopia is safe, predictable and effective. The treatment of astigmatism in addition to hyperopia provided similar results.
